New Knuckles -- Lighter Touch!
A heavy action can be made lighter simply by relocating the knuckles to a
more advantageous position on the shank. But what position? And how is this
job done quickly and neatly by any technician? Well, Nick will show you.
From a simplified but useful discussion on action leverage theory, to actual
in-class demos of the principles and techniques involved, this class will
guide you through all the necessary steps. Highlights include a simple, shank
holding and cutting jig (developed by Roland Kaplan), along with close-up
video footage of all setups and operations. Also, see Nicks adjustable
action model which visually demonstrates the effects on downweight as knuckle
and capstan locations are changed. As time permits, a discussion regarding
relocating capstans will round out this useful class.
Bridge Notching its all in the wrist, in the tools, oh
well
A class for you would-be bridge notchers. If you are a piano rebuilder of
any level of skill, sooner or later you will be required to install a new
bridge cap and then notch it.
What are the requirements for a professionally notched bridge? And what are
the best tools and techniques for the job? Nicks DVD footage on this
work shows many excellent close-ups of the sequence of tasks and tools to
get it done as well as many tips on how to practice before you set your hand
to an actual job. On hand will be Nicks assortment of chisels and tools,
and these will be demoed in some on-site notching work.
How Grand is Your Wire Bending?
Grand damper wire bending is not something we do everyday, but when the skill
is called for, we better be ready. Also, if you install a new back action
or simply new damper felts these skills are critical to success. Come and
see Nick demonstrate the processes of wire bending, head squaring, and neck
bending (whats neck bending?) Come learn what the three Tees
of setting the damper head for best function and visual results, and see
the required tools and jigs in action. The class will be combination lecture,
in-class demo and video footage. If time allows a short hands-on segment
will be included for a few attendees.
