All in the Family; Tone Regulating Boston and Essex Pianos
Boston and Essex pianos have become familiar to technicians over the past
number of years. While these instruments have many features of Steinway piano
designs and are part of the Steinway & Sons family of pianos, they also
differ in some respects; one of them being hammer construction and design
and the necessary differences in tone regulating techniques. This class will
compare and contrast those differences in both grand and vertical instruments,
with New York Steinway & Sons pianos. There will be a general discussion
of tone and acoustics, as well as demonstrations of specific techniques for
developing tone in all timbres and dynamics over the full compass of the
keyboard.
